Water Leaks can be costly

Finding water leaks can save you water, which means saving money on water bills. Follow  these easy steps to determine if you have a leak in a domestic or a sprinkler irrigation system.

Step 1. Turn all water-using appliances off so that no water is being used. This means turning off all water inside and outside the house including showers, sinks, washing machines, sprinkler systems and any appliance that uses water.

Step 2.   If you have a blue style vault you will need to come to the office and put a $20 cash deposit down on the wrench that opens the vault.  If you have an old style meter that is located in a concrete box you should be able to open it without a key.  Step. 3. Locate your shut off valve which should be 18 to 20 inches from the meter in either a concrete tube or a black ABS tube.  This is where you can turn your water off.  You can test it to make sure it is shut off by turning on a faucet in the home after you have operated the shut off valve.

Step 4. To check a toilet for a leak : Flush the toilet and while the reservoir is still filling, add 2 or 3 drops of food coloring to the water in the reservoir.

Wait 15-30 minutes. If the water in the bowl changes colors, the flapper valve needs to be replaced. In leaky toilets, the flapper valve often needs to be replaced.
